Colin Kaepernick vs. America
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepatrick has been receiving extreme heat after he refused to stand during the playing of the national anthem during the preseason game between Green Bay last Friday night. The athlete told NFL officials during an exclusive interview that “[I am] not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Many Americans took social media by storm voicing their opinions of outrage towards the 28 year old quarterback. According to those upset, the national anthem is an opportunity for Americans to honor the country and reflect on the liberties that this country has brought forth to those in it. However, Kaepernick feels opposite and so do many other Americans particularly within the black community. Like many other athletes, such as Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony, Kaepernick used his athletic platform to bring awareness and protest against the countless acts of suffrage and injustice to blacks in America. Its no secret that the frequent killings of innocent young black males by police officers have made headlines, and many have witnessed no charges being filed against officers for their negligence. He has suffered great backlash for expressing his rights, and fans have even gone to the extreme to burning his jersey. Big ups to Colin Kaepernick for standing up for what he believes in.
Most Americans are very hypocritical towards situations like this and fail to accept the truth of the unjust system towards blacks in America. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Salute to Colin Kaepernick.
